Certificate Description
1911 Florida East Coast RW 00 Bond Certificate. Historically important Florida railroad scripophily certificate with vignette of steam locomotive with passenger cars. The Florida East Coast Railway was developed by Henry Flagler, an American tycoon, real estate promoter, railroad developer and John D. Rockefeller's partner in Standard Oil. While visiting St. Augustine, Flagler noted both great potential and a lack of services along Florida's east coast. In 1885 he began building a grand St. Augustine hotel, the Ponce de Leon Hotel. Flagler realized that the key to developing Florida was a solid transportation system, and consequently purchased the narrow gauge Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Halifax River Railway. He realized that a major problem facing the existing Florida railway system was that each line operated on different gauge tracks, making interconnection impossible. He converted the line to standard gauge in 1890. Flagler continued to expand his line southward, eventually extending the Florida East Coast Railway to Key West in 1912, located 128 miles beyond the end of the Florida peninsula. The Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway was heavily damaged and partially destroyed in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Certificate is in VF+ condition, with numerous punch cancallations.
