    Winding mountain roads with majestic
nountains in the background was the
approach to the site of the 1958 rally and
lour sponsored by the Piedmont Harley-
    Davidson Dealers’ Association, held at
    Beech, N. C.
    Thousands of movie-goers are familiar
with this famous spot just outside Ashe-
ville, where the movie “Thunder Road”
was filmed, including the school house
used as the AMA registration booth dur-
ing the three days by Frances Cable, Blan-
    che Gardin and Evelyn Warren.
The Piedmont dealers spared no ex-
pense in the preparation and program
enjoyed by nearly 500 happy enthusiasts
attending from North and South Caro-
    lina, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and
    Georgia.
Tours to historic and picturesque points
of interest in the area were conducted
on Saturday morning by tour captains,
Don Israel and J. D. Faulkner of Ashe-
    ville, including Mount Mitchell, highest
peak in the East, and the Cherokee
    Indian Reservation.
    Saturday afternoon produced a fun
filled field meet that ended up with some
    smeared contestants following the choco-
late meringue pie eating contest and egg
    throwing contest. Sixty watermelons were
cut at the conclusion of the field meet
for the riders and citizens from the sur-
rounding area who came to see the games
and contests. After two pleasant days in
the great outdoors, everyone took part in
the activities at the beautiful Weaverville
Community Club with an old fashioned
square dance being the center of attrac-
tion. Those not wishing to dance had their
    relaxing moments watching their favorite
TV programs in a private lounge.
    Sunday morning. Glenn Shermer, an
    old-timer from Winston-Salem led a pro-
cession back to the Weaverville Club for
Sunday School. Odell Cable, district re-
feree, spoke during the attendance thank-
ing everyone for their cooperation and
fine conduct, and also, explained the
benefits riders receive from the AMA.
Ending the three-day weekend was the
uniform club contest. Taking top honors
for the largest club was the Mimosa MC
from Morgantown, with a tie between
the Port City Rebels MC of Wilmington
and the Western Mountain Riders MC
from Asheville, for best dressed club
    honors.
Winning top honors for the largest club
was the Mimosa MC of Hickory, N. C.
    Even the weatherman cooperated beau-
tifully until the final contest was com-
