Almost 100 BSA dealers and their shop personnel attended the 1958 service school at Nutley, N.J.
1958 BSA-Ariel Service School
One hundred and fifty BSA and Ariel
dealers and their shop personnel at-
tended the highly successful 1958 BSA
and Ariel Service School held at Nutley,
N. J., January 13-17. An intensive week
of daily sessions on latest service pro-
cedures was of prime interest to shop per-
sonnel while dealers devoted much time
on sales features and the busy BSA-Ariel
program for the coming season.
The Service School was under the cap-
able direction of Walt Brown, BSA service
manager assisted by Chief Service Instruc-
tor, Tommy McDermott, (who is now a
BSA dealer in Glens Falls, N. Y.)
The sales discussions were presided over
by T. A. Hodgdon, president of BSA, who
outlined the many fine selling points of
both BSA and Ariel lines.
The new BSA-Ariel accessory program
and 1958 advertising plans were discussed
by Emmett Moore, BSA advertising man-
age r.
Fred Schafer, parts manager, covered
parts ordering and stocking procedures.
The long list of trade personalities pre-
sent during the week was headed by Mr.
Edward Turner, managing director of the
BSA automotive group who delivered a
straight-from-the-shoulder address that was
vastly encouraging to all dealers present.
Mr. Turner also conducted a question and
answer session with the dealers during
which he delivered factual straight forward
answers to a barrage of queries on BSA
and Ariel plans for the years to come.
Without doubt this was one of the most
popular parts of the program. Another
high point of interest was the address de-
livered by Mr. E. C. Smith, secretary of the
American Motorcycle Association, whose
message was very well received by the
dealers present.
During the week talks on their special-
ties were delivered by many suppliers of
equipment used on BSA and Ariel motor-
cycles.
Climaxing of the week was the banquet
held at a nearby inn at which well over
150 people were present.
Awards were given at the banquet to
leading dealers for sales progress during
1957, and the week ended on a note of
high optimism for the coming season.
The BSA shipping department reported
the highest ever number of new motor-
cycles hauled away by dealers and the
parts and new accessory departments were
kept busy filling the many orders placed.
BSA Incorporated and eastern USA BSA
and Ariel dealers look forward to another
great sales year.
Attending the BSA-Ariel Service School banquet were left to right, seated: E. C. Smith.
Mrs. T. A. Hodgdon, Edward Turner, T. A. Hodgdon, Walt Brown, and Mrs. Brown.
Standing: Fred and Mrs. Shafer, Mrs. Marie Zusi, Mrs. Moore, and Emmett Moore.
