Dick Dorresteyn, a hard driving TT practitioner from San
Pablo, Calif., came out of the final turn like a whirlwind
taking Joe Leonard on the inside by just enough to beat the
old master home by a scant number plate.
11 is thrilling victory climaxed a highly successful day of racing
which, in addition, saw him place second in the 45 cubic inch
national, place second in his two elimination heats and post
the fastest qualifying time (30.84) in the 45 cubic inch time
trials.
George Everett, the defending 80" national champ from
Pasadena, Calif., failed to qualify by virtue of several spills
during the elimination heal, lie did, however, make his pres
dice known by grabbing the lead in the 45" title race from
Gary Emmick of Menlo Park, Calif., on the eighth lap and
roared home handily.
Emmick a skilled hand at grabbing a fast lead on the field,
roared out front in both championship races. Il was Emmick,
Leonard and Roger Reiman in the 80 until Reiman went down
in the fourth lap. At this point Dorresieyn was working his way
up through the pack and soon took Emmick who slipped back
and never threatened again.
Dorresieyn riding a close second on Leonard, found his op-
portunity in the last .corner of the race. Pouring it on full, he
blasted by Leonard on the inside and although Leonard was
closing fast, Dorresieyn flashed over the finish line with enough
margin to win the national championship.
In the 45, Emmick led the field for half the race but yielded
to the hard riding Everett in the eighth lap and gradually
drifted back into seventh place, leaving Dorresieyn. Andres and
Leonard to finish in the two, three and four spots.
Carroll Rcsweber of Milwaukee, Wis., who has built quite
a reputation on the flat tracks this year, did not need any of
the points from these two nationals for his standing as leader
for Grand National Champion. As it turned out, the only con-
tender, Joe Leonard, failed to pick up the necessary points to
better Resweber’s record.
Elimination heats in the 45 class were won by Everett, I.eon-
ard and Emmick while 80 heat winners were Leonard, Reiman
and Andres.
'1'he 45 trophy race for non-qualifiers was won by Jack Thur-
man with Del Buchanan, Bill Beardsley and Earl VVidman
holding down the two, three and four positions, respectively.
In the 80 consolation for non-qualifiers. Del Buchanan came
back to pick up the win followed home by Ray Knudson,
second: Barry Bebb, third; and Roger Sodcrstrom, fourth.
It's finishes like this one that makes nervous wrecks out of
the spectators. Jim Davis, giving the boys sufficient room,
flags home Dorresteyn and Leonard in the 80 national. This
finish, as one can see, was a real heart-stopper, and one to
be talked about for a long time.
This is the spot. The same two riders and the same positions
in the final corner, when Dorresteyn made his final gamble
and slipped by Leonard.
