Brad Andres Wins Daytona
200 Third Time
Tommy Seagraves Sets New Record in 100-Miler
B rad Andres of San Diego won the 200-
miler for the third time at an average
speed of 98.06 mph on his Harley-David-
son.
The 24 yead old Andres, finished one
minute and 45 seconds ahead of George
Roeder, Monroeville, Ohio. Roeder, a 23
year old farmer, also rode a Harley-Dav-
idson as did die first 14 finishers.
Andres won the first time in 1955, when
he was just 19. He repeated last year when
he averaged 98.70 mph. Brad’s father,
Len Andres, is the Harley-Davidson dealer
in San Diego who tunes and sets up the
bikes ridden by his son.
Joe Leonard, San Jose, Calif., finished
third on the Harley-Davidson, also tuned
up by Len Andres.
Competition was tight for the first 100
miles, with the leading changing hands 12
times.
Andres see sawed in front with Res-
weber (No. 1), from Cedarburg, Wis.,
and Reiman (No. 55), Kewanee, Ill. The
three hot Harley-Davidsons raced wheel
to wheel.
In the 26th lap, Reiman’s gas tank broke
and started leaking. He stopped on the
backstretch, pushed the machine nearly
a half mile to the pits, and had a new
gas tank installed. He was out for three
and a half laps but came back to finish
J 8th.
Andres, the prerace favorite, command-
ed the lead for keeps in this 26th lap and
never was headed again. His only chal-
lenger, Resweber, dropped out in the 31st
lap with a burned out clutch.
Andres pit stopped for fuel midway in
the race, and his crew had him back run-
ning in 14 seconds.
The event was marred by only one ac-
cident in the 14th lap in which three
spectators were injured, one fatally.
In the 100 mile amateur race Tommy
Seagraves of Orlando, Fla., set a new rec-
ord of 97.05 mph on his Harley-Davidson.
He led from start to finish.
The former record for the 100 mile
race was 95.21 mph, set in 1958 by Larry
Schafer, Sarasota.
Second place finisher was Ed Warren,
22 year old Harley-Davidson mechanic
from Flint, Mich., who was 73 seconds be-...
