Eddie moran, riding like an expert, won
the 70-mile race for novices over a field
of 69.
The Farmingdale, N.J., rider was very
consistent and never rode worse than third
during the 35-lap ride round the two-mile
road course. First, Ronald Knepper’s Tri-
umph charged into the lead. He was
quickly supplanted by pole sitter Kenneth
Hayes’ Norton. Then Colboch’s machine
took over at lap 16 and held the lead un-
til the lurking Moran moved in for the
big prize. He put his BSA ahead on the
32nd lap and stayed there to beat run-
ner-up Ken Colboch of Morristown, Tenn.
Moran covered the distance in 57 min-
utes, .37.49 seconds at an average speed of
72.927 mph. This was a record since the
tricky first turn has been rebuilt since
last year, allowing the riders to proceed
at a much more rapid pace into the in-
field.
The first six finishers were all in the
same lap at the end of the race which
was run in warm sunny weather.
Moran said after the race that he was
confident throughout that he could win it.
“My machine ran perfectly from start
to finish, and I had a feeling that I could
lake charge whenever I had to.”
