Frank (Buddy) Stubbs of Bellflower,
Calif., riding a Harley-Davidson, raced to
a new record for the distance in winning
the 100-miIc race.
Stubbs, riding a machine tuned by his
father, covered the 50 laps of the two-
mile road course in 1 hour, 21 minutes,
and 56.38 seconds for an average speed
of 73.224 mph. The old record was 69.760
set by Jody Nicholas of Nashville, on a
BSA in 1961.
Six riders were in the same lap when
Stubbs took the checkered flag.
Dick Guglielmana of Garden Grove,
Calif., was second. He was on a Harley-
Davidson and finished 53 seconds behind
the winner. Triumph rider Bill Lloyd,
Langley Park, Md., was third, and Can-
adian Donald Haddow, Quebec, was
fourth on a Triumph.
The amateur was a hard fought race
with the lead changing manv times. Bud-
dy Elmore, El Paso, led first, then Dick
Newell, El Monte, Calif., took over
and was followed by Danton Craig, Ot-
tawa, who held the lead until the 37th
lap when his BSA went out and Stubbs
took charge. No one got in front of him
again.
