Description
1970 Chuck Wepner Fight Worn Robe from Sonny Liston Bout.Five years before he knocked down Muhammad Ali at the Cleveland Coliseum, which inspired Sylvester Stallone to create the character Rocky Balboa and write the screenplay for the movie "Rocky," Chuck Wepner stepped into the ring against Sonny Liston in what would be the former heavyweight champion's last bout. The Night Train retired Wepner in the ninth round, closing out his pro career at 50-4 with thirty-nine knockouts. Six months later, Liston was found dead in his Las Vegas hotel room.
Red silk robe sports purple collar and red belt with white sleeve cuffs and pocket trim. "Everlast" label sewn over left chest pocket with faded size tag below. The left waist pocket is signed "Chuck Wepner" in 9/10 blue sharpie, while the right is inscribed "Wepner vs. Liston" in black sharpie. Exhibits appropriate wear.
