February 1978 was a cruel month for
Bernie Schreiber. For the second
year in a row he had traveled to Europe
to compete in the Observed Trials
World Championship. In the first event
in Ireland he finished a respectable
eighth. But Schreiber was downcast.
He knew he could place better than
eighth. It was cold in Ireland—four de-
grees above zero. The biting winter
weather numbed the Southern Califor-
nian, and finding traction for his
Bultaco in the icy traps proved difficult.
