    Description

    South Side Rail Road Company stock certificate issued to Robert Leslie and dated 1853. Signed by William Pannill, President, and J. D. Watkins, Treasurer of the company. Vignette of primitive train, with the top and bottom borders of the certificate a series of locomotive + two car trains. Printed on thin laid paper. Embossed corporate seal.
    The South Side, which ran between Petersburg and Lynchburg, Virginia, became a part of the Atlantic, Mississippi RR, which in turn, became the mainline of the Norfolk and Western RR. Thin paper.
    Robert Leslie (ca. 1794- ca. 1879): Merchant, of Petersburg, Va. Member of the Virginia mercantile firm of Leslie and Shepherd, and a slave owner.
    William Pannill V (1794-1870): President of the South Side Railroad. Served during the Civil War as provost marshal of Petersburg.
