The Atchison and Nebraska Railroad was chartered in 1867 to construct a railroad "from the City of Atchison, Kansas to some point on the Kansas/Nebraska border not farther west than 25 miles from the Missouri River.” Work began on the railroad in Atchison in the summer of 1869 and it was completed to the state line, three miles north of White Cloud, Kansas, in 1871. On November 3, 1871, the railroad absorbed the Atchison, Lincoln and Columbus Railroad, and completed building the railroad north into Lincoln, Nebraska, by the fall of 1872. Upon organization of the company, its name was changed to the “Atchison & Nebraska Railroad Company.” The Atchison & Nebraska Railroad Company was deeded to the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company on February 15th, 1908. The right of way of the Atchison & Nebraska Railroad went through the Kickapoo, Sac, Fox and Iowa Indian Reservations in Kansas and Nebraska.
