The Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad was chartered in 1867 in the State of Maine to build a line within Waldo County, Maine connecting eight stations within the county. The line was completed in 1870 and was majority-owned by the City of Belfast, and for its first 55 years operated under lease by the Maine Central Railroad as its Belfast Branch. Belfast, the county seat of Waldo County, is located at the mouth of Passagassawakeag River on Belfast Bay and Penobscot Bay.
