The Chicago and Canada Southern Railway Company was chartered in 1871 to build an extension of the Canada Southern Railway west from the township of Grosse Ile, Michigan (an island in the Detroit River) in southern Wayne County, to Chicago, Illinois. Grosse Ile was the western terminus of the Canada Southern Railway which connected with Buffalo, New York via a train ferry and bridge from Ontario. The line was only built to Fayette, Ohio, by September 1873 due to the Panic of 1873, and in the spring of 1874, the company hired General John S. “Jack” Casement as the railroad’s contractor to complete the line to Chicago. However, the company’s financial situation never did improve and Casement completed no work on the track. Following the reorganization of the Canada Southern in the late 1880s, the Chicago and Canada Southern was sold to the Detroit and Chicago Railroad, owned by the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway.
