The Chicago, Rock Island & El Paso Railway was founded in 1900 as a westward continuation of the Chicago Rock Island System to construct line from the New Mexico-Texas state line west to Tucumcari and on to Santa Rosa, New Mexico (in Guadalupe County, on the Pecos River). From Santa Rosa, the road continued to El Paso on the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad, which was built by the New Mexico Railway and Coal Company. Together with other railways in the Rock Island System (including the Tucumcari & Memphis Railway, which later became part of this railroad), there were continuous connections from Chicago and from Memphis via Oklahoma City and Amarillo to Los Angeles (which was completed by the Southern Pacific Railway). This "Golden State Route" was used regularly by famous passenger trains such as the Golden State Liner until 1968.
