The Cincinnati, Richmond and Fort Wayne Railroad Company was formed in the mid-1860s with the purpose of connecting the cities of Cincinnati, Richmond, Winchester, and Fort Wayne. The eighty-six mile stretch of rail between Richmond and Fort Wayne was completed in 1871, at which time it became part of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad Company which extended the line from northern Michigan to Cincinnati, Ohio, running through east central Indiana.
