The Cleveland & Marietta Railroad was formed in 1879 as a reorganization of the Marietta, Pittsburgh & Cleveland Railway Company (previously named the Marietta & Pittsburgh Railroad, formed in 1868), when the line was deeded to C. K. Garrison and the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad Company. The road ran from Marietta, Ohio (on the Ohio River in Washington County) north through Cambridge (Guernsey County) to Dover, Ohio (Tuscarawas County).
