    Description

Vintage original 11x14 in. U.S. lobby card
    (measuring 10-7/8 x 13-7/8), fine- condition.
The lavishly produced period costume drama
    DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS IN ROBIN HOOD
was released in 1922 by United Artists and
    directed by
    Allan Dwan
    . Silent Era superstar
    Douglas Fairbanks
produced and stars in this popular tale of Robin Hood which was subsequently remade in 1939 by Warner Bros. and featured Errol Flynn in the title role.
The image depicts a close shot of the handsome Earl of Huntingdon, who masquerades as Robin Hood, sharing a happy moment with many pretty maidens inside a castle. The border artwork features a full-length image of Fairbanks in costume as Robin Hood, holding a bow with his sword at his side. It is unrestored in fine- condition, as it measures approximately 10-7/8 x 13-7/8 in. and was either inadvertently cut to a smaller size during the printing process or had subsequently been lightly trimmed. This card had previously been framed and bears the outline from a mat near the outer edges. On the verso at the top are two small pieces of white tape where the back of the lobby card had been affixed to the mat to hold it in place. The colors are fresh and vibrant and this is one of the nicer cards from the set.
The film was the most expensive movie at its time, costing approximately .4 million. The exterior castle set is reputed to be the largest Hollywood set built for any silent movie (including D.W. Griffith's
    Intolerance)
. Lloyd Wright, Frank Lloyd Wright's son, designed at least one set which he later remodeled as a temporary band shell for the Hollywood Bowl. This film has the distinction of being the first to have a gala premiere. Theater owner Sid Grauman conceived the idea and the premiere was held at Grauman's brand-new Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. This film was long thought to be lost but was rediscovered in the 1960s.
