    Description

    Vintage original 11 x 14 in. (28 x 35 cm.) US lobby card
from the classic German-produced teens silent film drama,
    MADAME DUBARRY (US: PASSION)
, released in the US in 1919 by First National Pictures and
    directed by Ernst Lubitsch
. The film is a rags-to-riches tale of the milliner’s maid (Pola Negri) who became the famed mistress of King Louis XV (Emil Jannings) and set in the last years of the French aristocracy. The cast includes Harry Liedtke, Eduard von Winterstein, Reinhold Schünzel, Else Berna, Fred Immure, Gustav Czimeg, and Bernhard Goetzke.
The images features beautifully-rendered artwork depicting Madame DuBarry (
    Pola Negri
) pleading with her executioner to give her one more day of life as they stand next to a guillotine at the time of her execution. It is in very good condition and has been professionally paper-backed with light restoration to address a vertical crease through the height of the card to the left of the credits and a vertical
    tear on the
bottom left corner and light signs of wear along the first 4 in. of the top edge.
    Originally released as
    Madame DuBarry
when it premiered in Germany in September of 1919, the film was retitled as
    Passion
for its first US release in December of 1920. This German epic film made Pola Negri and director Ernst Lubitsch popular with American audiences and established both star and director as internationally-known celebrities.
