issued to Illinois Central Railroad
for 100 shares of capital stock (0 per share). Hand signed by company vice president and secretary.
Hand signed on verso by Stuyvesant Fish, as Treasurer and Acting President of the Illinois Central Railroad Company (see bio below)
. Certificate is about 8.5” x 11.5”. Light-brown print on beige-colored paper. Vignette with a train along a river next to a factory.
The Iowa Falls and Sioux City Rail Road Company was incorporated under general laws of Iowa on October 1, 1867, and was conveyed to the Dubuque and Sioux City on October 23, 1888. The road ran between Iowa Falls (in Hardin County, central Iowa) and Sioux City (in Woodbury and Plymouth Counties, western Iowa on the Missouri River), a distance of about 170 miles.
Stuyvesant Fish (1851 – 1923) was an American businessman (railroad, bank, and insurance company executive) and member of the Fish family who served as president of the Illinois Central Railroad from 1887 to 1906. Fish was also president and trustee of numerous other railroad companies. Stuyvesant Fish was a son of Hamilton Fish, 16th Governor of New York, as well as U.S. Senator and Secretary of State under President Ulysses S. Grant
