    Description

Pecos and Northern Texas Railway Company Share Certificate – Interesting Transfers
Offered for your consideration is a share certificate from a relatively small Texas railroad, transferred from an earlier certificate and cancelled in 1933, with a typewritten document dated the day after purchase attached to the back. The central vignette features a spread-winged eagle standing in a nest, with five eaglets waiting to be fed. In the background to the left are two ships at sea, while to the right a period locomotive pulls a train before a mountainous scene. Immediately below these scenes is a banner, upon which is printed, “
The Pecos and Northern Texas Railway Company
”, while above is a statement which indicates that the railroad was “
INCORPORATED UNDER THE LAWS OF THE
    /
    STATE OF
    /
    TEXAS
”. The body of the document is dominated by a financial obligation which states that “
    This Certifies that
    Avery Turner
    is the owner of
    one
Shares of the Capital Stock of The Pecos and Northern Texas Railway Company, transferable only on the Books of the Corporation in person or by Attorney on surrender of this Certificate properly endorsed
”. The final paragraph indicates that “
In Witness Whereof the President and Secretary have hereunto subscribed their names and caused its corporate Seal to be hereto affixed at AMARILLO, this
    31
    st
    day of
    March

”, followed by the aforementioned signatures. A dark green decorative border encloses the foregoing material, with banners at the bottom noting the price of each share. A manuscript notation reading “
    Cancelled

    th
    1933
    /
    Crt # 68
” possibly indicates that this certificate was transferred for a different number certificate (this was already done once for this particular piece – see below). The back of the certificate bears a partly printed transfer form (accomplished) stating “
For Value Received I hereby Sell, transfer and assign to W. W. Kelly the Shares of Stock within mentioned and authorize _________________ to make the necessary transfer on the Books of the Corporation _____________________ Witness my hand and Seal this 7
    th
    day of April 1933
”, followed by the signature of “
    Avery Turner
”. This transfer was done “
    In Presence of
    R E Logan
” and bears a 5-cent Internal Revenue Documentary stamp. The original stub has been glued to the left end of the document upon redemption. This stub is interesting in that it seems to indicate an earlier transfer of this share of stock. The stub corresponds to “

” on an original certificate numbered “

”. An additional document is attached to the certificate, this one type-written and dated the day after transfer. This document states that “
In consideration of one dollar and other valuable consideration, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, I hereby agree, upon demand of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company at any time before January 1, 1921, or thereafter before the expiration of ninety days after I shall have delivered to the President or Chairman of the Board of Directors of said Company written notice calling upon it to exercise this privilege, to sell, assign and deliver to said The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company, in the City of New York, for the sum of Twenty-five dollars (.00), one share of the capital stock of the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway Company, the certificate for which share is hereto attached.
    ”. It is “
    Dated
    Apl 1
    st
    , 1920.
” and is signed at the conclusion by “
    Avery Turner
”. This document also bears an Internal Revenue stamp, this one of a 2-cent denomination (with a manuscript “
    AT
    /
    4-1-20
” atop). An interesting stock certificate given the various transfers. Worthy of further research.
The presently offered document exhibits signs of expected period use, though it retains much of its original condition. Light toning is noted across the entire surface, imparting to the paper an off-white to beige hue. This provides a lovely contrast to the green and black of the printing, as well as the light blue of the manuscript additions. These manuscript portions appear to have faded slightly, though all are still fully legible (the name of the secretary of the company, however, is not visible due to cancellation marks). As noted earlier, the original stub has been glued to the end of the certificate and an additional document has been glued to the back, both of which have caused some wrinkling to the original paper (the stub has also covered the left end of the certificate). Two small cancellation holes can be seen at the lower right, while three holes are present near the left edge of the stub. Several filing folds are noted, as is some wrinkling at the right. Measuring approximately 8 x 12¾ inches, this piece would frame nicely with a photograph of a period locomotive or a map of the line’s route. As noted earlier, it would also make an interesting research project for the local historian or railroad enthusiast.
