Most modern people won’t watch films in black and white let alone silents. That’s why modern people don’t know the name Ramon Novarro, one of the biggest leading men of the silent era. It’s hard to believe that this actor whose name remains unknown to most people was once a household name.
Of course those who know Novarro know him as the title role in the silent movie version of
    Ben Hur
, but that is just one film out of many. One should note that although it wasn’t Novarro’s big break, he did score as the villainous Rupert of Hentzau in the silent
    The Prisoner of Zenda
(1922). Novarro steals the film from everyone. That’s why it’s a grand thing that Novarro received his big break only one year later with
    Scaramouche
    (1923).
    Still,
    Ben Hur
was just around the corner and once that hit Novarro was on top. He was a “leading man” before, but now he was a “star”.
    Ben Hur
not only gave Novarro a giant film to his credit, but it allowed him to act and quite well too. But most people would say that it is
The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg
(1927) that gave Novarro his all-time greatest role and film credit.
When talkies quickly rolled around I think everyone could agree that it wasn’t Novarro’s voice that killed his career it was the types of films he was receiving. However, Novarro does have some good talkies and some of them show of a quite impressive singing talent. But like in
    The Prisoner of Zenda
    and
    The Student Prince
, Novarro seemed to shine very well in comic situations. He is delightful in comic moments in
    Daybreak
    (1931) and
    The Cat and the Fiddle
(1934). Although Novarro also proved able to handle drama well in movies like
    Mata Hari
    (1931) among others.
Novarro does get a good wrap from people who know and observe his films. I think this is because Novarro is surprisingly natural for a Latin lover of his time.
