    was issued to George E. Spencer for 10 shares of capital stock (0 per share). Hand signed by company president and secretary. Certificate is about 7.5" x 11."

    The Saint Joseph and Western Railroad Company was formed in 1875 (and incorporated in 1877) as a reorganization of the bankrupt St. Joseph and Denver City Railroad. The route extended west 109 miles from St. Joseph, Missouri, on the Missouri River, to Marysville, Kansas, and then north and northwest for another 120 miles to Hastings, Nebraska. In 1879, a separate but still affiliated company called the Hastings and Grand Island Railroad completed the 21 miles northward between those two cities. In less than six months, the St. Joseph and Denver City Railroad purchased the Hastings and Grand Island company, giving the St. Joseph and Denver City Railroad a direct connection with the Union Pacific mainline. In 1880, Union Pacific gained control of the St. Joseph and Western Railroad, but operated it as a separate company.
