Great Tom Thumb locomotive pulling stagecoach type car vignette by International Banknote. One of the famous board game stocks.
Company History: The Erie Canal’s success in opening the cities of the Great Lakes area to the shipping trade of the Atlantic spurred interest in the city of Baltimore for transportation routes to aid westward expansion. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was chartered in Maryland in 1827 to connect Baltimore with the Ohio River. Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the only surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, laid its cornerstone on July 4, 1828. The B&O was the first in America to carry passengers and freight. Peter Cooper, a New Yorker with land investments in Baltimore, suggested the steam locomotive, which was being used in England. Passengers cheered as TOM THUMB, one of the first American locomotives charged past a horse drawn car during an impromptu seven mile race near Baltimore in 1800. Although the horse won the race, the tiny engine proved the practicality of steam transportation.
The initial goal of connecting Baltimore and the Ohio River took over 25 years to accomplish. Although the railroads were not the primary cause of westward expansion, they furnished the ways and means for a hardy and courageous people, some of whom came from distant lands to build and develop a vast new segment of a rapidly growing America.
