THE Bob Murphy Radio Booth Door from Shea Stadium. MLB Authenticated. You are bidding on a huge piece of Mets History! This is the one and only Shea Stadium Home Radio Broadcast Booth door. The booth was officially named the Bob Murphy Radio Booth in 2002 in honor of legendary, Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Murphy. The door comes with the official MLB Hologram authentication number, verifying that it is this one-of-a-kind piece of Shea Stadium.
This door has witnessed an incredible 44 years of sports and music history. Shea Stadium opened in 1964 and was home to the New York Mets (MLB) (1964–2008), New York Jets (AFL / NFL) (1964–1983), New York Yankees (MLB) (1974–1975), New York Giants (NFL) (1975), and St. John's football (2000) before its demolition in 2008. This history includes: Jim Bunning’s perfect game (1964); MLB All-Star Game (1964), Joe Namath’s professional debut (1964); the first rock concert ever held in a stadium (the Beatles 1965; they played there again in 1966); Nolan Ryan’s debut and the 1st of his all-time record 5,714 strikeouts (1966); Tom Seaver’s debut (1967); the New York Jets’ Super Bowl Championship season (1968); the Amazin’ Mets’ World Series Championship (1969); the 1973 NLCS (including the final Major League appearance of the great Willie Mays); a visit from the Pope (1979); the Mets’ 1986 World Series Championship including Bill Buckner’s error and the Red Sox great implosion in Game 6; Spider-Man’s wedding (1987); the 1988 NLCS; 1999 NLCS; 2000 “Subway Series” World Series; the 1st major sporting event in New York City following 9/11; the last game in Montreal Expos history (2004); the 2006 NLCS; the final Shea Stadium concert (Billy Joel- 2008). Shea Stadium was also named the Most Hallowed venue in rock music by VH-1.
The radio booth at Shea was named for Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Murphy who called the Mets’ home games from this booth from 1964-2003. He was honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame with the Ford C. Frick Award in 1994. A photo of him posing with this very door is the only photo on his Wikipedia page, and the plaque from this door is pictured on the box of his stadium giveaway bobblehead.
The door itself measures 6’9” tall and 2’3” wide. It is a sliding door made of steel, and is grey on the outside and Mets blue on the inside. The Bob Murphy plaque was removed sometime in the past, and a temporary replacement has been added for aesthetic purposes. The original stadium room number sign is still installed under which someone wrote the number (P-15) in sharpie, most likely during the demolition process. When this was obtained it had a very worn photo of Bob Murphy with the door attached where the plaque should have been, and that photo will be included with the door when purchased. Please see photos.
When the Mets sold the seats out of Shea, they were sold at 9 a pair (a combination of the 1986 and 1969 World Series championship season years), but there were 45,000 of those. Since there’s only one Bob Murphy Radio Booth door in the world, it is even more rare and unique. Don’t miss your chance to own a truly incredible piece of history and a one-of-a-kind, must-have item for the most die-hard Mets fan.
