Description

Vintage Pharmacy Ink Blotter w/ Wampole's Creo-Terpin Advertising (circa 1910). Condition is "Used," as-pictured.
When using fountain pens, pharmacists often used an ink blotter or blotting paper. Drug manufacturers jumped on the opportunity to provide useful "ink blotters" (blotting paper) with their advertising on one side.
This ink blotter features an advertisement for Wampole's Creo-Terpin for Coughs and Colds, with the artwork picturing a mother and young son, and promoting the benefits of a good night's sleep.
Imprinted in the center of the advertisement is the pharmacy information: Kimbrough-Carlton Prescription Druggists of Union Point, GA. Note that in that era, the phone number consisted of only two digits, "89"!
The medicated cough syrup contained the ingredient
CHLOROFORM
, which is today expressly prohibited for use in the manufacture of drugs of its serious health risks (and it's a known carcinogen). The "sleep aid" -- targeting children in this advertisement -- also included another special ingredient:
25% alcohol
